Pandemic influenza (H1N1) 2009 update
As of 31 January 2010, worldwide 209 countries and overseas territories/communities have reported laboratory confirmed cases of pandemic influenza H1N1 2009, including over 15174 deaths. Over 150 cities sign up for World Health Day campaign
This year, the World Health Day theme is urbanization and health with a campaign uniting cities and citizens around the world. WHO Kobe Centre is the secretariat for the campaign. Its goal is to engage 1000 cities in World Health Day activities and to collect the stories of 1000 lives - people who have had a positive impact on the health of people in urban areas. So far cities as diverse as Amman, Boston, Oaxaca, Damascus, San Francisco and Sanafa have joined. Discover more...

Megacities and urban health
Megacities are cities of 10 million or more inhabitants. There are around 20 megacities in the world and they are highly diverse. Starting with an analysis of their common characteristics, we identify nine challenges that megacities face which have particular health impact: transportation, governance, water and sanitation, safety, food security, water and sanitation, health care, emergency preparedness, and environmental issues.
